Dr. Imthiaz is a leading Maxillofacial Surgeon specializing in diagnosis and treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) and Dental Sleep Medicine.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery (BDS) from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai in 2002. He then headed the Dental Department at Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Sankara Hospital, Chennai. He completed his Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Chennai, in 2007.
He pursued research and academics as a Lecturer (2007-2011), Reader (2011-2015) and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (2015-2016) at Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital. Through 2007-2016, he was the primary Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at 6 major hospitals in the city, attending to facial trauma, maxillofacial infections, corrective jaw surgeries, facial reconstructive & cosmetic surgeries and treatments of the head, face and neck.
In the course of his surgical practice, he developed a keen interest in the study of the anatomy, physiology and disorders of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). In the management of jaw joint problems, up until recently, the dental profession operated in a two-dimensional field of teeth and temporomandibular joints. There is still a lack of awareness regarding the complexities of diseases affecting the temporomandibular joints, each requiring precise evaluation and nuanced treatment.
Dr. Imthiaz pursued an in-depth study and training in this science, which is collectively called Neuromuscular Dentistry. This specialized field involves the management of Head-Neck-Shoulder pain, myofascial pain, burning-mouth syndrome, spondylitis, upper-body posture issues and sleep-related issues. So interrelated and connected are these ailments that they are now grouped as CCMD (Cranio Cervical Mandibular Disorders) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
In recognition of his proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, in 2016 Dr. Imthiaz was awarded a Diplomate in TMD and Sleep Medicine by Bioresearch, Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
Dr. Imthiaz advocates the practice of Neuromuscular dentistry that operates in a dynamic three-dimensional field of teeth, joints and muscle (with associated nerves). Sharing his extensive experience and expertise, he conducts numerous workshops and webinars where he teaches his students how to better treat patients suffering from jaw joint problems.
Treating Temporomandibular Joint Disorders as the extended clinical expression of Cranial Cervical Mandibular Dysfunction (CCMD) requires great skill and precision. Applying neuromuscular principles and techniques combined with state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Imthiaz continues to successfully treat those suffering from TMJ problems, complex teeth & jaw misalignments and jaw-airway-associated sleep disorders.
